On October 29th, join us for a dinner, and critical conversation, on men’s mental health in the nursing profession led by Dr. John Oliffe, a Professor and Canada Research Chair in Men's Health Promotion at the School of Nursing at UBC.
This is a hybrid event. The in-person dinner at BCNU’s head office in Burnaby will begin at 18:00 and the presentation and discussion will begin at 19:00 and can be attended in-person or remotely via zoom.
Event Description:
In collaboration with BCNU’s Men in Nursing Network, and as part of Mental Health Awareness Month, the session will offer participants a brief overview of men’s health in Canada, with a focus on mental health challenges that can affect men and boys, including substance use, depression, and distressed or disrupted relationships.
In particular, the session will explore the impact of "deficit-based" representations of masculinity on providing gender-responsive healthcare for boys and young men. Such representations often solely focus on negative attributes of male identity and experience and reinforce stereotypes of masculinity as harmful and as a risk to others. The session will explore how masculinity is critiqued and discussed in contexts of the “manosphere” and “looksmaxxing” with a focus on mental health.
The session will also explore how men’s help-seeking can be reframed as health-seeking, while also introducing emerging gender theories, including caring masculinities, as useful frameworks for nursing practice.
Speaker’s Bio: As founder and lead investigator of UBC’s Men’s Health Research program (www.menshealthresearch.ubc.ca), Dr. John Oliffe (Professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair) focuses on masculinities as it influences men’s health behaviours and illness management, and its impact on partners, families and overall life quality. Findings drawn from his research offer guidance to clinicians and researchers to advance men’s mental health and suicide prevention.
This event will be held in hybrid format.
This event is not salary replaced. All members and students are welcome to attend.
